This issue of Smoke Signal was written by two of the most knowledgeable experts on the process on reviving Tucson’s Presidio and the excavation done on the original site. J. Homer Thiel was the lead archaeologist on the fort’s excavation and Gayle Harrison Hartmann was President of the Board of the Tucson Presidio Trust during the crucial years of lobbying and moving the project forward within the City and the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose District.
