Ongoing Fort Lowell Park Walking Tours

This walking tour covers the history of the land, people, and fort structures that played a huge part in the development of modern Tucson during the Apache Wars, America’s longest-running military conflict. This 2-hour leisurely walk is just under a mile and begins and ends at the Fort Museum. Admission to the museum is included with the tour.

The Museum

The Fort Lowell Museum shares the story of the area located at the confluence of the Tanque Verde Creek and Pantano Wash and the many people who have lived here.

Fort Lowell was a United States Army post active from 1873 to 1891. Displays present the purpose and history of the fort and the daily lives of soldiers and their families. They also present the broader story of the Apache of the region and the challenges endured during the Apache wars. Additionally, the pre-history of the area is covered including information on the nearby Hohokam site.

Admission to the museum is $5/person. Veterans are $4/person. Children 13 and younger and Fort Lowell and Presidio Museum members are free. Visitors 13 years old and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Life In the Old West

History in the Park

Ever wonder about life in the Old West? See how people lived, worked, and played in historic Tucson. Visitors can learn about various positions in the army, which include the camp cooks, cavalry, blacksmith, and infantry. Civilian life will also be represented as visitors can take on our faro dealer, learn about Tucson’s first professional teacher, Mining, the hazards of being a housewife, and the life of a peddler.

Cannon firings by the 3rd US Battery A at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm!

Experience the music of the time period with an 11 am concert by the 4th Cavalry Regimental Band of Fort Lowell.

Feliz Navidad! Celebrate the season Arizona-style with Isabella and her cousin Carlos as they visit the worlds largest cactus, explore the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, hear mariachi bands, and even see the London Bridge…now transplanted to this fascinating state.

Join us for a story time followed by a themed hands-on activity. Perfect for 4-7-year-olds but open to children of all ages. No registration required. For December’s story time, we will read “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” followed by a themed hands-on activity.
