* Trip to Tumacacori, Guevavi Mission and Calabazas - March 8, 8 am - 4 pm
Meet at the Presidio at 8 a.m. Departure at 8:15 a.m. Led by archaeologist Homer Thiel and historian Rick Collins. Visit the three units of Tumacacori National Historical Park. Each unit of the Park preserves Spanish era chapels and other features. Presidio Museum member Rick Collins works as a ranger for Tumacacori and Presidio Museum Homer Thiel has conducted archaeological work at all three. We will carpool from Tucson and drive to Tumacacori to tour the standing church and grounds. We will then drive to the Calabazas Mission and visit the remnants of the chapel. Lastly, we will travel to the Guevavi Mission and learn about its history and archaeology. We will have a box lunch at that site before returning to Tucson. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for walking and some steep hills. Return to Tucson late afternoon.
