Morning Muster Tours

At the Presidio, we believe that “living” history is the most entertaining and most impactful form of education for our younger visitors. Morning Muster Tours is designed specifically for  groups of 25-30 schoolchildren aged 10 - 15 and provides a 2 hour, age-appropriate educational tours.

The tour starts with a docent led walk-through of the Presidio that includes a live demonstration of blacksmithing or soldiering.  This is followed by two interactive activities that might include any of the following:

  • drawing with cochineal dye
  • gardening
  • period games
  • clay beads
  • grinding corn
  • native food sampling
  • making chocolate (like the Spanish)
  • making tortillas
  • washing clothes by hand (see picture at right)

The tour ends with a writing or coloring activity allowing children a chance to express what they have learned.

Morning Muster tours is designed for school groups and private groups such as Girl and Boy Scouts, home-schoolers or summer campers. Maximum group number is 30. Transportation is not included.
