Surviving the Summer
$20/Member, $25/Non-Members

Ken Scoville takes attendees on a 2-mile tour of how Tucsonans in Territorial Tucson got through the summer without A/C. everyone had to develop the same strategies as other desert dwellers: endure, evade, and escape. We will visit some of the earliest remaining adobe homes and discuss how one could evade the heat of the day and then sleep outside while your home cooled down at night. The daily life schedule changed to endure the sunshine: ollas provided cool water to drink, ramadas gave shade, residents drank beer, and even ice cream was available in 1876. Summers would get a little easier after the railroad arrived and new strategies were adopted with the idea of escaping to the Pacific beaches if one could afford the ticket price. We will get as close as possible to where diarist and saloon keeper George Hand first had ice cream and end the tour with a stop at your guide’s favorite ice cream shop, if you want to indulge at your own expense. Maps, images, and quotes from Hand’s diary will aid the time traveler experience to 150 years ago in the Old Pueblo.
