David Yetman is a research social scientist who has spent his career studying the desert regions of the southwest USA and Northern Mexico. His research has been primarily directed towards the state of Sonora, its indigenous people, their history, and how they have incorporated native resources into their lives. He specializes in the plants, geography and the lifeways and cultures of the region's indigenous peoples. He estimates he had crossed the US-Mexico border more than 500 times and has written numerous journal articles and books about his experiences.
In addition to his writing, Yetman served for nine years as host for the PBS documentary television series The Desert Speaks and currently produces and hosts the PBS series In the Americas with David Yetman. He received Emmy Awards in 2007 and 2014 for his documentary television work.
Besides his work as an academic, Yetman also served as Pima County Supervisor from 1977-1988 contributing to the community work that resulted in the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan.
