February's book is The Flower in the Skull by Kathleen Alcalá.
The Flower in the Skull follows three generations of Ópata Native American women living in the Sonoran Desert. The novel spans 130 years, beginning in the 1870s and traveling to the 1990s. Concha has fled to Tucson, where she finds work as a housekeeper and gives birth to her daughter Rosa. Rosa feels the trauma of Concha’s loss but struggles to understand her mother’s culture. The story jumps forward to 1990s Los Angeles, where Shelly, a young Chicana woman, digs through historical archives in search of information about the Ópata people.
Inspired by the author’s research into her own family history, The Flower in the Skull highlights the importance of a connection to ancestors.
The book club will meet at the Tucson Presidio Museum. Please check in at the Front Desk, and a staff member will show you to our meeting room.
