PRESIDIO MUSEUM AND FORT LOWELL MUSEUM
DOCENT AND INTERPRETER TRAINING

September 27, Oct. 4, 11, and 18
9 am – 12:30 pm
Venue: Presidio Museum and Fort Lowell Museum

Ready to support your community? Love history and culture? Then we want you!

This training class is for individuals who are excited about local history, want to learn more, and share their enthusiasm with Presidio Museum and Fort Lowell visitors.  Volunteers decide for themselves which activities they participate in and have a variety of opportunities to get involved, including leading tours of the museum, participating in children’s programming, becoming re-enactors during various Living History programs, or presenting historic demonstrations. New volunteers will be asked to apply and fill out a commitment form.

However, "history buffs" who are not interested in volunteering but want to learn more about Tucson's history are also welcome to take the course.  (See below). This course will not be offered again until 2027.

Classes will include, but are not limited to:

  • The early people of the Tucson basin

  • Apache culture and history

  • The history and people of the Spanish Presidio, both civilian and military

  • Tucson under the Mexican Republic

  • The history of Fort Lowell and a tour of the property

  • A visit to our sister organization, Mission Garden

Presenters in the course include:

  • Dr. Tom Sheridan, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, University of Arizona, and Research Anthropologist, Southwest Center
  • Mauro Trejo, Presidio Museum board member and local tour guide and historian
  • Bette Bunker Richards, Former Curator of Fort Lowell Museum
  • Al Dart, MA, Registered Professional Archaeologist and Executive Director of Old Pueblo Archaeology Center

This training is available for current and prospective volunteers. Those wanting to expand their knowledge base without the commitment of volunteering afterwards are also welcome, based on availability and with an altered fee structure.  (See below).
