Pioneer African Americans of Pima County, Arizona Territory by Homer Thiel

The Territorial period (1856-1912) saw a massive influx of new residents arriving in search of economic opportunities. Among these people were hundreds of African Americans, mostly from the southern United States. Homer has sought to identify these individuals and prepare biographical sketches. His talk brings to light the lives of some of these pioneers, who have largely been ignored in the published histories of the region.

Homer Thiel is a historical archaeologist and project director with Desert Archaeology, Inc.  He has more than 30 years of archaeological research experience, specializing in historic archaeology, family history research, bioarchaeology, and artifact studies. He uncovered portions of the Tucson Presidio, the San Agustin Mission, and many downtown Tucson blocks. He is also a past-president of the Presidio Museum Board of Directors.
