been missing since 1889!
Wham Payroll Robbery

May 11\, 1889\, Major Joseph W. Wham and an escor
t of eleven Buffalo Soldiers were transporting a p
ayroll of $28\,000 ($1\,016\,272 in 2026) in gold
and silver coins from Fort Grant to Fort Thomas. T
he party was ambushed by a group of bandits\, who\
, after over an hour of fighting\, made off with t
he payroll. The money was never recovered.
