Tour: Missions and Presidios of Southern California – SOLD OUT

July 25 @ 8:00 am - July 31 @ 5:00 pm

Missions and Presidios of Southern California Tour
July 25-31, 2022 – SOLD OUT – Email AlexL@TucsonPresidio.com to be added to the waitlist.

The story of Tucson’s founding and the development of the Spanish settlements of California are entwined. Part of the viceroyalty’s vision for a land route connecting New Spain to Alta California and realized by Juan Bautista de Anza’s expedition, Tucson represented a key link in the chain of that aspired reality of northern expansion. To better understand this history, we’ll explore this connection and others on this heritage itinerary by getting to know the missions and presidios of southern California up close and in person. Following El Camino Real, the distinct missions of the Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and San Diego areas are the focus of the trip as well as two of the four California presidios. This broader geographic panorama of history will let us consider the perspectives of the indigenous peoples, the religious, and the military as well as provide the opportunity to compare and contrast the Spanish colonial and Mexican history eras of Arizona to California.

Guests will also have a chance to experience interpretative centers of other presidios. We will get to know el Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park operated by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation as well as the San Diego Presidio/Serra Museum. On the return from San Diego, travel companions visit one of the sites of the often forgotten California missions along the Colorado River where this land route strategy of incorporating Alta California into New Spain came to a bloody end in the Massacre at the Yuma Crossing in 1781. Trip registration includes chartered bus transportation with a professional driver and guide services as well as admission fees to California mission and presidio sites on the itinerary. All breakfasts (6) and dinners (6) are  included (lunches are on the guest’s own tab for freedom and flexibility from group activities).
